  • Let me introduce you our latest addition, Eddie. He's a dream dog with a huge will to please, that's not very terrier like. He loves to hunt, of course! He got to us as a problem dog, though.
Eddie's life wasn't easy. He was sold as a puppy with perfect temperament, with a neuter contract and the promise, that the owners will have him as a family pet, will go to dog school and understand that a terrier has to do other things than lay on the sofa all day long. Unfortunately none of it ever happened. The owners never mentioned any problem when asked how Eddie is doing.
When Eddie was 4 years old, I got woken up by a phone call - they're bringing him to me for the weekend, he has bitten someone in the family and it's been going like this for 3 years now. The weekend stay became a forever stay - they refused the help of trainers that I offered them, they did not want the dog anymore. I appreciate they brought him to me and not to a shelter or to a vet to put him down.
So, Eddie was here and I had to deal with a dog who was misunderstood his whole life. I had to choose a strategy how to work with him and I chose behaviour modification by positive reinforcement, as that is the only way to achieve long-term results. I was surprised how well Eddie did, he was eager to learn, happy that there are finally clear rules that he can follow and that my behaviour towards him was very clear and well readable.
Eddie has lived in the previous environment for 4 years, and the bad behaviour was very well fixed. He learned the new behaviour, but I could not guarantee to anyone that he would never ever return to the old pattern, especially when changing owners. I tried to find a new owner for him for about a year. After many many visitors and emails and phone calls and explanations, I got sick of the search and decided to keep him. 6 or 7 dogs are not a big difference anyway, right? In the past few years, the new dogs always come unexpectedly and in pairs, it's impossible to add just one dog :)
Eddie loves to hunt, he also loves any kind of fetch games. When there's a possibility, we try to train agility with him. He loves any kind of training and attention, but is generally a very easy going dog who doesn't need much. He's happy with a good run and play twice a day and just sleeps for the rest of the day.
He got his name from the movie "Edward Scissorhands". His fate was similar too, fortunately our Eddie's life seems to have an happy end.
